With Miami’s historically mercurial housing market, many luxury mansions change hands regularly. So listing agents weren’t exactly exaggerating when they introduced a $26 million Coral Gables mansion to the market for the first time and billed it as a “once in a lifetime” opportunity.
At $26 million, the price tag of this plantation-style home at 612 Sunset Drive dwarfs those of its lowly neighbors, which range from about $1 million to $12 million, according to Zillow. Luxury real estate firm Douglas Elliman calls the six-bedroom, six-and-a-half bathroom, 15,200-square-foot property a “rare estate of timeless elegance and enduring quality.”
“Nestled on prestigious Sunset Road beneath majestic oaks and manicured ivy, this residence was constructed by a prominent builder alongside Corwil Architects to stand the test of time,” according to the firm. “A coral stone entrance, motorized gates, circular Chicago brick driveway and a porte cochere set the tone for grand living.”
The Coral Gables-based firm and builders completed the home in 2002 as a “legacy” property, meaning it was meant to hold significant sentimental, generational value, Realtor.com reported. The building’s stately, symmetrical columns, fencing, and brickwork, juxtaposed with its sprawling oaks and climbing ivy, immediately attract the eye and set the home apart from its neighbors.
With its vine-draped columns and stately white exterior, the mansion looks like the White House’s relaxed, New Orleans–born relative. The home’s exterior oozes old-world charm, as if it were made for a Southern Jay Gatsby.
Upon entry, guests are immediately greeted by stark white walls, an imposing staircase, and an ornate scroll-panel banister stretching from the first floor to the second, where an expansive balcony looks over the home’s entrance. The estate’s multiple porches offer sweeping views of verdant yards. A canopy of thick oaks hangs over the corners of the front and back yard, making it perfectly poised to host any kind of outdoor gathering, from small get-togethers (afternoon tea, anyone?) to opulent weddings.
Other features include motorized gates, a generator to keep those Gatsby-inspired parties raging through the night, underground gas tanks, French doors with five-point locking systems, mahogany wood floors and doors, and brass hardware. And, if you’re searching for a haunted twist, the 1,000-square-foot air-conditioned attic may tickle your fancy.
