Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan and our creepy next door neighbor who we are convinced is a bruja all have something in common these days when it comes to the world of fashion: baubles featuring evil eyes. Yeah, we never saw that one coming either. The jewelry which typically showcases a rather scary all staring blue eye has been sprouting all over the wrists, necks, and fingers of gals in Miami.
We’re not sure how this ancient trend whose origins seem to be from Turkey and Greece has become part of popular culture, but everyone from high-end contemporary boutiques like Jessie’s to kiosks at Dolphin Mall have been making beaucoup moolah off them.
Prices start at $10 at stores like Shop Gitana up to $136 for ruby and
sapphire encrusted pieces at Rebel boutique. “I love the evil eye
jewelry,” says N&K Designs creator Kaki Lopez who hand makes and
sells the trendy bracelets and necklaces with her sister Nani.
“Women of
all ages are buying them. Some women like myself wear it for fun, but I
do have a lot of clients who believe in its power to protect you from
“Mal de Ojo” (evil eye),” said Lopez.
The gems supposedly have magical
powers that can protect wearers from the envious glances of others. We’d
love to scoff at this superstition, but we must confess that we
actually don some of the trendy arm candy ourselves. Hey, whatever helps
right? And for the plain Janes who aren’t into sporting bling, resort
wear shop Nic Del Mar sells swimwear and cover ups emblazoned with the
evil eye.
