Fausto Lopez, the city of Miami Police Officer who was pulled over by a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper for speeding 120 mph down the Florida Turnpike while off duty, could get a plea deal that would keep him out of jail. Lopez faces misdemeanor reckless driving charges. The maximum punishment for the crime is 90 days in the slammer.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, Assistant State Attorney David Schulson says he will not seek jail time if Lopez pleads either guilty or no contest to the charges.
Lopez could however still be on the hook for a $500 fine and $3,300 in court costs.
In a case that made national headlines, Lopez was pulled over by the FHP trooper in October. He was late to a moonlighting job in Coconut Grove, and the trooper actually had to pull a gun on Lopez.
The arrest spurred something of a rivalry between the Miami Police and the FHP. But don’t worry guys, they totally patched it up with a charity softball game.
Lopez is still employed by Miami Police, but the future of his fate will be decided after the trail.
