How real is your drag? How hot are your rags? How tight is your footwork? No doubt, you can’t touch the high queeniness of ladies like Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, Octavia St. Laurent, Anji Xtravaganza, and Willi Ninja.
In the late ’80s, non-filmmaker Jennie Livingston documented the drag balls of NYC, following around black and latin queens as they hit the runway, hustled hard, did drugs, sold themselves on the streets, saved up for sex changes, and tried to dodge the dangers of racism, hate, and AIDS.
The now-legendary documentary, Paris Is Burning, has been selected by Lazaro Rodriguez and Nick Klein to screen tonight at nomadic venue the End as part of the art show “A: I Don’t Know, B: I Don’t Care.” See the cut for details and three clips from the film.
