Enjoy classic journalism while you still can, because one day all your news will come in page-view baiting list form. It is the future of this sad little, dying industry.

The problem with so many dumb lists is that they often contradict each other, rendering the already futile exercise even more meaningless. Take these two recent examples. They looked at pretty much the same set of data and arrived at two wildly different conclusions.

The Daily Beast says Miami is the eighth best city in America  to meet men. They overlooked the fact that Miami men aren’t, on average, that educated, and still put us in the top ten because we have so many gyms and a good social scene. At least The Beast knew the right people to talk to though — Miami’s entry comes with a quote from our very own Raina McLeod.

Then there’s some site called Total Beauty that has declared Miami as number three on its list of “Eight Cities with the Ugliest Guys.” They note that Miamians are lazy because, like The Beast notes, there are so many gyms, but dear God, 27 percent of us don’t work out (probably the 27 percent who can’t afford a gym membership?) and docks us for not being that educated …because, as is well known, good looks are directly related to being smart. (The Awl jumps in and notes that, oddly, many of the cities on the “ugly” list happen to have large Hispanic populations).
