Ultimately, Diane Lawrence, a 67-year-old Kendall grandmother, wants to go to jail. She plans to plant herself at the offices of Florida’s Democratic Reps. Kendrick Meek and Debbie Wasserman Schultz and demand their support in impeaching President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. But, for now, she’ll settle for Saturday’s kickoff rally for the South Florida Impeachment Coalition at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 7701 S.W. 76th Ave., Miami.

David Swanson, creator of ImpeachCheney.org and active in laundry list of left-leaning causes, will speak at the 3:30 p.m. event.

Seven weeks ago, Lawrence, a registered Democrat, and a handful of South Florida political activists cooked up the idea for the coalition at her dining room table. “We consider Cheney and Bush domestic enemies and they’re trashing the constitution,” she says.

She insists there’s still time to boot leaders from office: “The Bill Clinton impeachment for sex took two months,” she says. “Bush and Cheney have 15 months to destroy this country … Our real goal is take the i-word of the closet.” —Janine Zeitlin
