The finalists for the Association of Food Journalists Awards were revealed yesterday, and the Miami New Times was nominated for three awards, more than any other alternative weekly in the country.
Staff writer Gus Garcia-Roberts is a finalist for Best Newspaper Food Feature (Under 200,000 Circulation) for his story “Pork Pirates,” which details the illegal slaughterhouses in northwest Miami-Dade operating unbeknownst to local law enforcement or U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Scoring a second award is Jackie Sayet’s “Bogus Beef,” an exposé on the mislabeling on Kobe beef in area restaurants.
Finally, food critic Lee Klein is finalist for Best Newspaper Restaurant Criticism, going head-to-head with Michael Bauer of the San Francisco Chronicle and Tom Sietsema of The Washington Post.
Placement of the winners will be announced September 2.
