Our city is certainly not short on burger joints, but that doesn’t stop new concepts from popping up all the time. The most recent to announce its arrival is Smashburger, promising fresh, “smashed-to-order” burgers along with hand-spun Häagen-Dazs shakes and an array of local craft bottled beers and wine.
With a goal to “make burgers relevant again” and “put a better burger experience back in people’s lives,” the place can clearly talk the talk, but does it have what it takes to satisfy Miami’s seemingly never-ending craving for juicy burgers?
We know that three locations are planned — in Miami, Kendall, and Coral Springs — but they’re being hush-hush on the details, telling us only: “While we are excited to enter the Miami market, we do not have any information to release at this time about the restaurant locations or opening dates. I can tell you that the company is looking at multiple spots for a fall opening.”
Good luck, Smashburger. If you’re going to compete, you’d better bring the beef.

When Smashburger opens in the fall, they plan to separate themselves from the pack by opening a place with a “burger soul,” serving simple burgers done right. They claim the chain’s 110 current locations are fast becoming “every city’s favorite place for burgers,” with a target to reach 500 locations during the next couple of years.
Sure, simple burgers can be big business, as evidenced by the success of In-N-Out and Shake Shack, but at some point we have to reach our patty saturation point. This got us thinking: With the success of unique burgers such as the foie-gras-and-truffle-topped Stairway to Heaven burger at Burger & Beer Joint, and the spicy-pork-and-tater-tot-covered Bulgogi Burger at Sakaya, is a simple burger with “soul” enough to pique the interest of SoFla’s burger eaters?
