From playwright Neil Simon, who gave the world gems such as The Odd Couple and Barefoot in the Park, comes a tale about love and politics set 51 years in the future. Well, not exactly, but the Mad Cat Theatre Company’s version of Simon’s 1966 comedy, The Star-Spangled Girl, will spin the story around and drop it in the middle of 2066. Though the year is advanced, it seems as if the human race is more outdated than futuristic. Directed by artistic director and MCT founder Paul Tei, this interpretation features a world in which “technology has folded in on itself and women still struggle for equality.” Company members Theo Reyna, Noah Levine, and Jessica Farr star as the threesome who find themselves in a love triangle made messy by friendship and politics.
The Star-Spangled Girl premieres Saturday at SandBox at Miami Theater Center (9806 NE Second Ave., Miami Shores) with a special opening-night celebration featuring food and drinks at 7 p.m. Showtime is 8, and the production will run through January 25. Opening-night tickets cost $50 and include the preshow cocktail hour; regular show tickets cost $30 for general admission and $15 for students. Visit madcattheatre.org.

Sat., Jan. 10, 8 p.m., 2015
