One of the most terrifying volcanic eruptions in Earth’s history gave us the famous ruins of Pompeii after Italy’s Mount Vesuvius cracked its stack in 79 AD. The ancient resort town today is awash with the preserved bodies of the era’s fabulously wealthy alongside the evocative remnants of torrid, bacchanalian scenes and a trove of consumer goods filthy with ash. Coincidentally, the same conditions currently prevail in the Big Mango after the plastic surgery-preserved carcasses of the affluent, priceless artworks, high technology, and rampant consumerism have blown into town following the eruption of Miami Art Week. If you want to experience a glimpse of how our calcified culture might appear to archaeologists a thousand years from now, visit the Design District’s Locust Projects (3852 N. Miami Ave., Miami), where homegrown talent Daniel Arsham has torn a colossal crater into the gallery floor and filled it with 3,000 sculptures he confected from primal geological media such as volcanic ash, obsidian, crystal, and volcanic ash. Inside Arsham’s breathtaking “Welcome to the Future,” you’ll stumble upon boomboxes, pay phones, film reels, cameras, car tires, steering wheels, crayon boxes, cameras, footballs, videogame controllers, keyboards, portable TV sets, a Gibson guitar, and even a Shell gas station sign. Call 305-576-8570 or visit locustprojects.org.
