Sure, Miami has a reputation for beautiful beaches, hot bodies, and a questionable fashion sense. But for insiders, South Florida is all about the swamp — that uniquely beautiful muck from which this region emerged way back when. Locals can celebrate our singular ecosystem at the 2014 Swamp Heritage Festival, a yearly tribute to Florida’s environmental roots. This year’s festivities will teach visitors about the rugged history of our terrain through park rangers, volunteers, local experts, and residents who will share their love of the swamp. Presentations include environmental photography by Clyde Butcher, a talk on Zora Neale Hurston’s book Their Eyes Were Watching God and the history of logging in the Big Cypress region by Dr. Audrey Peterman, and Houston Cypress on the history of the Miccosukee people in South Florida. The event will also feature food and live music performances by Raiford Starke, J. Robert Houghtaling, Boom Slang Swamp Singer, and others. The Swamp Heritage Festival takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Big Cypress Nature Reserve (33000 Tamiami Trail East, Ochopee). Admission is free. Call 239-695-4758 or visit nps.gov.
