Stone crab season officially kicked off October 15. And this year, a skydiver dropped the first batch of the delectable and highly anticipated crustaceans straight from the morning fishing boats and into Peacock Park — not by coincidence. Peacock Park (2820 McFarlane Rd., Miami) happens to be the setting for the Coconut Grove Seafood Festival, taking place this Sunday.
Seafoodies will delight in the many vendors participating in the all-day event. A $20 admission at the gate gets you onto the festival grounds, where you can peruse the cuisine, from Monty’s stone crab and its infamous mustard sauce to Casablanca Fish Market’s paella and ceviche.
Gourmands will also be table to take home fresh fish from the Grove Wharf — a seafood market outfitted with ice cases brimming with the catch of the day. Fishmongers on hand will not only help you choose your fish wisely but also give you cooking tips. And speaking of cooking: The Milam Kitchen Lab is welcoming local chefs from neighborhood restaurants Jaguar and La Bottega, among others, to educate aspiring home cooks through in-person demos.
It’s not all just fish and games either. There will be plenty of fun from 11 a.m. to sundown with live Caribbean music and nautically themed art, jewelry, and decor exhibitors — in case you want a souvenir you can’t eat. Admission costs $15 online or $20 at the gate. Call 305-461-2700 or visit coconutgroveseafoodfestival.com.
