The easy sway, sublime melodies, and tropical ambiance of Brazil’s seductive sound drive the rhythm of world music. Still, most Americans’ knowledge and appreciation of Brazilian music is limited to Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sergio Mendes, Astrud Gilberto, and the “The Girl From Ipanema.”
The musical tapestry of that country’s culture is far richer and considerably more vibrant. No one represents that rich heritage better than Caetano Veloso, a musician inspired by not only his nation’s traditions but also stunningly diverse outside influences such as Western pop music, Dadaist precepts, poetry of the avant garde, and even the Rolling Stones. A singer, guitarist, and astute social activist, he helped establish the so-called ’60s tropicalismo movement, a broad cultural aesthetic that garnered him international recognition and the ire of the authorities in his native land.
Happily, then, when Veloso takes his Abracaco Tour to the Fillmore (1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach) at 8 p.m. Saturday, he’ll arrive on a crest of adulation that includes two Grammy Awards, nine Latin Grammys, and recent recognition as the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year for 2012.
Tickets cost $38.50 to $78.50 and are available at ticketmaster.com.
