Sure, Miami’s an EDM-heavy, beat freak haven. But that hasn’t scared off other styles of music, especially those with close ties to the Magic City’s Latin culture.
Just ask the folks behind the Cuba Nu-Wave Festival, bringing four multitalented musicians to the Gusman Center this Saturday to kick it, Cuban old-school.
Starting at 8 p.m., four different musicians will conjure up Caribbean rhythms — each in his or her own unique way. Raul Paz, a Nu-Wave pioneer, has a modern sound influenced by Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley. Yerba Buena co-founder Descember Bueno is all about the beat, blending hip-hop with Cuban percussion. Singer-songwriter Lena Burke brings a classical tone to the festival; she’s a concert pianist from a family of Cuban musicians. And Gema Corredera, a Cuban exile, has compiles the sounds of her travels to Spain, New York, and Miami into one smooth, cohesive sound.
The music is the main attraction, of course. But inside the Olympia Lounge, audience members will also have access to gourmet cheese and fruit baskets, plus open bar and table service during the show.
