If you missed Jennine Capó Crucet’s reading at this year’s Miami Book Fair, don’t worry — you weren’t alone. The room filled up so fast with people wanting to hear the Miami-born and -bred author that a lot of us were turned away at the door. This Monday at 8 p.m., we finally get a second chance. Crucet will read from her award-winning debut short story collection, How to Leave Hialeah, at Books & Books in the Gables. The 11 stories in How to Leave Hialeah are pure Miami from start to finish — beginning in South Beach, crossing the gulf to Cuba, and ending up — where else? — in that neighborhood where the streets always flood and every canal is supposedly filled with alligators. Crucet is a great reader and knows, like, every single person in the county, so it would be wise to show up to the House That Mitchell Kaplan Built a little early. It’ll give you a chance to secure your copy of the book, because we guarantee there won’t be any left at the end. Admission is free.
