There seems to be a real apathy about theater these days. But every so often, a production appears as the little engine that could, pressing forward on word-of-mouth recs alone. Platanos and Collard Greens, dubbed a “modern West Side Story” by the New York Times, began just that way in a little off-Broadway theater with only 70 seats; it’s now on a national theater tour.
Miamians can see Platanos and Collard Greens, a romantic comedy about an African-American student and his Latina girlfriend told through hip-hop rhymes, at the Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) this Wednesday. The play uses humor and hip-hop poetics to explore the couple’s struggle with family, interracial love, and urban myths
