Having been bestowed honors such as a John Steinbeck Award, an ASCAP Founders Award, the Harry Chapin Memorial Humanitarian Award, and even an honorary doctorate degree, Jackson Browne boasts a bio that reads more like that of a poet or philosopher than a folk rocker. But then again, Browne is all three.
He has lent his voice to Farm Aid and Amnesty International benefit concerts and written songs for the likes of Linda Ronstadt, the Byrds, and Joan Baez. In 2004, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by none other than the Boss, who said that even though the Eagles had been inducted first, Browne “wrote the songs they wished they had written.” His classic tracks “The Pretender” and “Sky Blue and Black” are still crowd favorites, and John McCain’s presidential campaign even tried to steal Browne’s 1977 “Running on Empty” to rally its flock.
