If only we’d been told as teenagers that drinking cough syrup, playing videogames, and listening to Appetite for Destruction on repeat could turn us into art stars, we might have ended up like Cory Arcangel. (OK, so maybe we are leaving out certain mitigating factors, such as talent, imagination, and an Oberlin arts education.) Instead, we’ve become unaccomplished adults who drink cough syrup, play videogames, and listen to Appetite for Destruction on repeat.

Anyway, this Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., we can all meet Arcangel at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami and check out his new exhibition “The Sharper Image,” running through May 9. It features pseudo-sedative states, hacked PlayStations, and split-screen video images of Slash and Axl. The MOCA press release describes him as “a pioneer in the use of digital technologies in contemporary art.” But we prefer to call Cory an inspiration to all those artists, addicts, gamers, and metalheads who’ve yet to earn themselves a solo show.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: April 27. Continues through May 9, 2010

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
