Tapped Out

In Happy Feet, all of those penguins could not have challenged their elders and found their grooves were it not for Savion Glover. But choreographing an adorable, animated cadre of flightless birds is, presumably, something this astronomically talented 39-year-old does just on weekends, in between touring the country with his tap show, teaching dance, and appearing in movies, TV shows, and Broadway productions — not to mention performances at the White House and Smithsonian Institute. With his flowing dreadlocks and hard-hitting tap stomps, Glover has gone a long way to bring world-music rhythms — especially African funk — into the traditional hoofing pantheon, but he’s also more than proficient dancing through the classics. The man whom Gregory Hines described as “the best tap dancer who ever lived” will do just that in his current show, “Sole Sanctuary,” which pays tribute to his clickety-clacking forbears.
