Attention, drag queens of Miami: It’s time to greet your matriarch.
No, RuPaul isn’t in town. No, Cher hasn’t set foot in South Florida. And no, Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical doesn’t open on Miami stages until April.
But what Casino Miami Jai-Alai (3500 NW 37th Ave., Miami) has in store for you is just as great: disco queen Gloria Gaynor, the woman who recorded “I Will Survive” and, knowingly or not, gave cross-dressers worldwide the perfect anthem for strutting their fabulous stuff onstage.
Sure, she had other hits, like “Never Can Say Goodbye” and “I Am What I Am.” And yes, she’s in the middle of a career revival that also includes highly entertaining guest appearances on TV. But when you think of Gloria Gaynor, you can’t help but sing “At first I was afraid, I was petrified” to yourself, just a little. Admit it — that song is gonna be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. And you’re gonna love it.
Thank Gaynor by singing along to “I Will Survive” (because you know all the words) this Saturday.
