Spase Cadets Foundation’s play Lil Haiti: The Untold Story chronicles the struggles of Haitian immigrants who have journeyed from the impoverished island nation to South Florida over the past three decades. Directed by 26-year-old Haitian national Yonel Aris, it’s set in the early ’80s through mid-’90s, and tells the tale of how a people, motivated by a thirst for freedom and true independence, come to adopt Miami as their new home. The story follows a slew of characters who, inspired by love for each other and enlivened by a sense of humor, grapple with the hardships that come along with immigration and escape from destitution. It’s a story that echoes in Haitian communities throughout South Florida to this day.
