There are holiday traditions you dread, like suffering through a crowded Christmas mass or helping your handsy Aunt Victoria get to bed after she’s had a few too many. And then there are the ones you can’t wait to experience again, like George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, presented annually by Miami City Ballet.
This year’s cast includes more than 100 dancers and children, bringing the story of toy soldiers, sugar-plum fairies, and mouse kings to the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) with the energy of a Broadway musical. This will be the first Nutcracker performed in Miami under the leadership of artistic director Lourdes Lopez, who opened her first season with MCB in October with an impressive series of dances ranging from classic to modern. And with more guys now studying at the Miami City Ballet school than ever before, expect to see plenty of “ballerinos” onstage. (You might want to leave Aunt Victoria at home.)
