The Nutcracker has been a Christmas staple since before the term Christmas staple existed, predating hanging icicle lights, Santa’s in shopping malls, and eggnog. (Well, maybe not eggnog.) The beloved holiday jewel will get a contemporary spin in the House Theatre of Chicago’s The Nutcracker: A Magical New Play, which opens Thursday night at 7:30 at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami).
The piece is set in the present day and is a play rather than the traditional ballet. It’s based on the original E.T.A. Hoffmann story, chronicling young Clara’s efforts to save Christmas and bring her family together with the help of a magical nutcracker. It may not be the classic as you know it, but, well, the Nutcracker still cracks nuts, and (spoiler alert) Clara still saves Christmas.
The Nutcracker: A Magical New Play will run through December 30. Tickets cost $45 and can be purchased online or at the box office. Call 305-949-6722 or visit arshtcenter.org. Grace Stainback
