Reader support matters more than ever

We're in the final stretch of our summer campaign. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the journalism our community relies on. Reader support is helping shape the future of local news.

What do a nun, hyena, bartender alien, and Ted Danson have in common? Whoopi Goldberg. Caryn Elaine Johnson — the woman whose stage name is composed of a fart noise and fake surname her mother thought sounded Jewish-enough to make her a star — has had quite a career. Her acting and comedy have earned her numerous awards including a Tony (for Thoroughly Modern Millie), a Golden Globe (for The Color Purple), a handful of Emmys, and an Oscar (for Ghost). She’s also an LBGT activist, host of The View, and author. And if you’d like to own one of her recently published works, she’ll be signing Is It Just Me? and Sugar Plum Ballerinas: Terrible Terrel at Books & Books Saturday at 3 p.m. Hate to read but love to laugh? The dreadlocked diva will also perform at the Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House the same night at 8 p.m.

Sat., Jan. 15, 8 p.m., 2011
