Now that Art Basel is a mere three weeks away, we should all link up in a human centipede chain and get protective of our local art scene. We’re all for the hoity-toity art fair and the strange spin off events (Alexander McQueen-designed rug anyone? Hello Kitty pop-up shop? Why not.), which follow it around like a piece of TP stuck on a Swede’s shoe. But what about the freaking year-round art scene that grows here even in the sweat lodge that is August?

Local arts advocate and facilitator Miami Independent Thinkers is making sure there’s a place for homegrown talent during Art Basel — that human chain may not be necessary. With the help of 305 Creative Group, Red Fish Media, and K1, they’re hosting a satellite fair at Casa Wynwood, a gigantic warehouse at NW 1st Court and 21st Street. The fair will include live music, DJs, performance art, fashion, and vittles by Chef Jeremiah of gastropod.
