The Guava Rugelach Festival may be named after sweetly rich little pastries, but this festival is more a treat for your ears and eyes than your palate.
The two-day event at Next@19th (137 NE 19th St., Miami) celebrates Miami’s diverse Jewish community through music. From songs in Ladino (a Sephardic equivalent of Yiddish, first spoken in Spain in the 1400s), to traditional klezmer music with a Latin vibe, each act represents the blending of traditional Jewish heritage with our tropical home.
The festival kicks off Saturday at 9 p.m. with the premiere of musical piece “Of Essence & Time,” a collaboration of Sephardic singer Susana Behar, flamenco guitarist Jose Luis Rodriguez, and nu-flamenco dancer Niurca Marquez.
Sunday’s events begin at 1 p.m. with the performance Klezmer for Kids, followed by an afternoon filled with singing, storytelling, and dancing, all celebrating various forms of Jewish cultural roots, including jazz, classical, and spiritual musical performances. The program culminates at 4:30 p.m. with an all-star musical jam.
