Dan Marino retired 13 years ago, and since then, the Miami Dolphins have struggled dramatically in the quarterback hunt. Every promising hopeful has gone bust, notching one or two impressive seasons before succumbing to the shadow of Miami’s beloved Hall of Fame QB and his record-breaking 17 seasons. With the disappointing 2011 season behind them, the Fins enter 2012 with a positive outlook on the future. And they’re banking $12.688 million on 24-year-old rookie QB Ryan Tannehill to take them there. The Dolphins selected Tannehill in the first round of the 2012 draft as the eighth overall pick, presumably with the intention of having him back up Matt Moore and David Garrard before giving him the keys to the offense. Tannehill, however, has other plans. “I feel like I’m in [the starting-quarterback race],” he recently told the Sun-Sentinel. “I may be naive, but the coaches haven’t given me any indication that I’m not, so I’m going to go out there every day and do my best to win the job.” He’ll have his first preseason interview when the Fins take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday at 7:30 p.m., in the first 2012-13 home game at Sun Life Stadium (2269 Dan Marino Blvd., Miami Gardens).
