For most avid football fans — who attempt in the off-season to beat their varsity blues by watching the action-packed sport of professional golf — spring and early summer totally suck. But there is a way to satisfy one’s passion for the pigskin during these months devoid of tailgate parties and sexy beer commercials: watching the Miami Fury, the Magic City’s own all-women tackle football team, thrash rivals the Atlanta Xplosion for their last game of the season.
Be warned, sexist slobs, regardless of reproductive organs, these ladies can play ball: They ended their last season in the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) with a 7-1 record, animatedly standing by co-team owner and defensive end Gayla Harrington’s philosophy that “As soon as you put on the gear, you’re an athlete.” The team, however, has had its share of downfalls this season, having lost several starters to injuries, but Harrington guarantees that “fans can expect to see an exciting, hard-hitting game….” Let’s just hope it’s not too hard. It goes down at 7:00 p.m. at Curtis Park Sports Complex. Tickets cost $12 in advance, $15 at the gate.
