Southwest Miami-Dade residents, rejoice! Something is actually happening in your neighborhood! Pack up the kids and head to the third annual Deering Seafood Festival, touted as “the biggest backyard festival on the bay.” Activities include nature hikes, cooking demos, a performance by local band the Mosquitoheads, and a humongous seafood cookout with more all-you-can-eat shrimp than the local strip club.
The Deering Estate is a 450-acre bayfront natural preserve of tropical lushness, with “archaeological treasures” dating back to the 1500s. (It’s funny how people from the 1500s left their trash on the ground, and when we dig it up we call it “archaeological treasure.”) The cost of the event is ten dollars, including all the food, which may be the best buy in town. And get this: Deering Estate Foundation Members get in for free. Dang! We’ve been meaning to join the Deering Estate Foundation! Now we’ll have to pay ten bucks. But we’d pay anything to see the Mosquitoheads. Enjoy a day o’ fun and fish today from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Sun., March 18, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
