If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to become more artistically sound, then Asser Saint-Val is a name you should learn and learn well. A Miami resident and Haiti native, Saint-Val has adopted an abstract figurative style to approach a topic that even in the 21st century is still delicate: “Melanin: Deconstructing Shades of Blackness.” His previous exhibit displayed figurative works depicting Haitian women in all their glory. Saint-Val says of the transition from one style to another: “This shift in my work has extended my concept, my creativity, as well as my mind in a much deeper way by understanding the value of melanin in the human body.” The show is hosted by Diaspora Vibe Gallery, a virtual incubator of the Caribbean diaspora and other artists of color. The opening reception takes place tonight from 7:00 to 10:00 and is followed by an artist talk. The exhibit runs through January 31.
