Say what you will about opera in general — that it’s intimidating, boring, or simply outdated. That might be true with traditional opera companies. But don’t you dare hurl those insults at Florida Grand Opera. The Magic City’s operatic artists have made a consistent effort to reach new audiences; in the past months alone, they’ve invited journalists to live-tweet their performances, stepped up their special-effects game with groundbreaking stage makeup, and even performed scenes from Romeo et Juliette during last week’s Second Saturday Art Walk in hipsterrific Wynwood.
If you caught the show last weekend, you’ve seen the relevancy of opera firsthand. So don’t miss the full version when it opens Saturday at the Adrienne Arsht Center, adding even more drama to Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers with arias, overtures, and all the rest of that opera stuff.
