Do we need to remind you again? Hurricane season begins in three days. If you have not yet stocked up on supplies, now is the time. From May 21 through June 1, the Florida legislature has enacted a tax-free holiday for hurricane preparedness, so you can save some change for a bottle of hurricane party hooch as you thrown down your dollars for canned foods, batteries, flashlights, candles, bleach, and antibacterial wipes. If you have only cordless or cellular phones, maybe you should pick up an old-fashioned corded one that will (let’s hope) still work even if the power goes out. You should also buy a few cheap mirrors. Why? Well, place a few candles in front of them and you will instantly double the intensity of your light. And please don’t waste your time taping up your windows; it really does not do anything but gunk up the glass with sticky goo. In case you’re wondering if you will be a hurricane to be remembered, here is a list of this year’s names: Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sandy, Tony, Valerie, and William. Visit www.myflorida.com/dor/tips for a list of tax-free items, and www.nhc.noaa.gov for storm-tracking information.
