On this holy weekend, God bless Sweat Records for putting on all-ages shows that aren’t in obscure warehouses that make anyone who is over 18 (or 21) feel like an abject weirdo for showing up. Rather, the shop’s in-stores are some of the few events where a truly wide age range can discover new acts in a welcoming (and alcohol-free) zone and sip on some pretty good milk-alternative lattes to boot.
The latest in this series of free events comes Saturday with an 8 p.m. show starring local act Pentagram Oxagram. The gig is billed as the official debut (awwww) by this assembly of four area teens. Unlike many of their peers, though, they’re skipping the same-old, same-old power-pop rock in favor of more experimental, slightly world-beat-inflected, jangly indie rock that could promise some interesting stuff in the future.
They’re backed up by buddies that have little in common musically. North Miami/Hollywood act A Call to Arms is a Talent Farm regular that specializes in sped-up pop punk with hardcore-ish gang vocals à la once-local great New Found Glory. A third band is touted as a “favorite on the local circuit” but is meant to be a complete surprise. Organizers are mum, and because of the wildly varying genres of the named bands, it’s difficult to guess. You’ll just have to show up and see for yourself. Admission is free, after all.
