March is officially recognized as Women’s History Month, also the month Congress decided to hold an all-male panel on birth control. Many men, particularly the legislative type, have traditionally loved to speak on behalf of vaginas everywhere that might or might not want to push out cantaloupe-size humans every nine months like clockwork. What would happen if ladies’ nether regions spoke for themselves?
Playwright and feminist Eve Ensler has been positing her theory since 1996, when she debuted The Vagina Monologues, a production that was eventually translated into 48 languages and performed by Oprah Winfrey, Jane Fonda, and Whoopi Goldberg, among other celebrities. The monologues range from sexy and funny — vivid re-enactments of orgasms, rants against tampons — to serious explorations of rape and genital mutilation.
