Although it’s not unusual to hear a crooner work a Tom Jones tune at a karaoke bar, it is a bit odd for an event promoter to burst into one of the panty catcher’s swinging songs during an interview. “It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone/It’s not unusual to have fun with anyone!” Joseph Bonilla serenades us while talking about his Scary-Okee Wednesdays event at Broadway Billiards. But this isn’t just another karaoke night. “It’s still cheesy — I’ll bust out with The Love Boat theme or Three’s Company, but it will come after a thrashing heavy-metal song,” says the music man, known as Josepher, who promises an evening of songs you will not hear anywhere else. “Danzig, Misfits, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure….” Josepher rattles off a list that covers a bit of the Eighties, retro, goth, New Wave, and metal selections included in their catalogue of 37,000 songs. “It’s basically karaoke for a younger crowd.” The two-dollar drinks (all night) and two-dollar Heinekens (until midnight) will have you lubed and ready to perform your version of “Personal Jesus.” Admission is free.
