Scarface Gets a Retrial

Although the name Scarface will forever be linked with a scowling Al Pacino, it originated with one of America’s most notorious criminals, Al Capone. Made infamous by his sometimes-bullet-riddled effort to bring the people some hooch, Capone pioneered one of the leading trends of the era: bootlegging. Next on that list: fedoras. But while Al Capone’s name and nickname have been thrown around repeatedly in popular culture, rarely does the general public have the opportunity to hear from the man himself. This Tuesday at 9:15 a.m., Capone will take center stage once again when HistoryMiami partners with the 11th Judicial Circuit Court to re-enact his 1930 perjury trial. The Re-Trial of Al “Scarface” Capone will take place at the Miami-Dade County Courthouse in the very room where the trial was originally held. Nearly 80 years later, Courtroom 6-1 will be retrofitted with the ambiance and aesthetic of the ’30s, while local actors play the parts of Scarface, the feds, and the curious mob of onlookers.
