Kicking off a Saturday night with comedy is like kicking a soccer ball into a goalie’s groin. It’s kind of funny, and you might even score (if you’re on a date, that is). The goal — or should we say gooooooooal! — of stand-up comedy is to make audiences laugh. Very few comedians in this city can do it better than Ricky Cruz, one of the indubitable kings of local comedy. The Miami native has been a staple of the city’s stand-up comedy scene for almost 15 years. His ever-evolving routine consistently possesses a sharp insight into our multicultural landscape. Miami is just downright funny, and Cruz is a consummate professional in his satire and shtick. You’ve seen him on HBO, Comedy Central, and NBC’s Last Comic Standing, as well as at the South Beach Comedy Festival; now catch him live in an intimate one-night-only performance at the Area Stage Company.
