DFA Records’ love affair with midtown lounge Bardot has reached telenovela-level hotness since the label celebrated its tenth anniversary with Holy Ghost!, Nancy Whang, and the Juan MacLean there. This week, New Times‘ winner for Best Neighborhood Bar of 2010 welcomes the Crystal Ark, a DFA collaboration between Gavin Russom and telenovela director Viva Ruiz, for the Living Room Sessions concert series.

The inspiration for the Crystal Ark struck during a five-week tour of Brazil. On the road, Russom became enamored with the sounds of carioca funk, atabaque drumming, and tropicalia. So the DFA resident tech nerd quickly teamed with Ruiz and began focusing on the rhythm, physicality, and movement that would eventually become the Crystal Ark.

Last year, the duo released five-minute single “The City Never Sleeps,” a sultry, bilingual ditty peppered with infectious bleep-bleeps and bloop-bloops. On “Touch,” the Crystal Ark’s followup, Ruiz and Russom do it again, adding hints of glass percussion and drum machine tap-taps for yet another highly addictive dance jam.

Climb aboard the Ark this Thursday.
