As an artist, you can either wait to be discovered by some rich benefactor who will turn you into his own personal propaganda machine, or you can grab the art world by its balls and show ’em what you got. Graffiti virtuosos Typoe and Murder clearly went with the latter when they chose to display their work all over downtown Miami, the Design District, and many of our city’s grittier nooks and crannies. But beginning tonight and continuing through October 13, the stray artists and the striking images they’ve created will take up residency in the Wynwood Art District’s historic Octopus Building for an exhibit titled “A True Story I Once Made Up.” The show displays the harmony that results when graffiti meets fine art.
“How can you ignore someone that is changing our surroundings with their messages when these messages are always in your face? Sooner or later you’re going to have to feel a bit curious [as to] who exactly these people are. And whether you are disgusted or amused, they got you to think about them,” says Antikulture’s director and curator, Robert Gimek. Stop by and check out the latest exhibit, and you won’t want to sandblast these masterpieces. Tonight’s opening reception takes place from 7:00 to 11:00.
