Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has proven to be the rarest kind of cultural phenomenon – a literary work beloved by adults and children alike, one that has transcended adaptations from novel to stage to film and sustained popularity for more than a century. If you ask us, its enduring popularity can be attributed to its main underlying theme – drugs, dude. It’s gotta be the drugs. The story of a bored girl who enters an alternate world and encounters increasingly strange anthropomorphic characters is giddy fun for a kid. To an adult who’s lived a little, the plot looks a lot more like a trip rife with obvious metaphors. C’mon! There’s a hookah-smoking caterpillar! And Alice eats mushrooms! Of course, you might want to keep the knowing grins and snickers to yourself if you take the youngsters to The PlayGround Theatre’s new production of this fantastic fairy tale.

The PlayGround’s productions are targeted for family fun, but if you’re an unemployed stoner seeking adult amusement from this children’s classic, Maria Teresa Alvarado’s video and photo projections will make you feel like you’re growing and shrinking right alongside the protagonist. Sweet! See it today at 10 a.m., or wait for the late show Friday, April 4, at 4 p.m. at the Colony Theater.
