Orchids are as edible as they are beautiful, and when chefs include them as a side dish with fish or meat, it’s always with a warning that you are about to swallow a flower. But not just any flower — the princess of them all. Once sold for outer-galactic prices, the rumored aphrodisiac is now affordable to everyone. At this weekend’s Miami International Orchid Show, a half-million of the exotic buds will be on display and for sale starting at $12. Forget the wimpy offerings you’ve seen sold at local supermarkets or on the roadside; these magnificent specimens of every size, shade, and shape will blow your mind. This Friday through Sunday, stop and smell the flowers at the Doubletree Miami Mart Hotel while breeders and aficionados from around the world gather to hail garden royalty. There will be awards for the prettiest bloom and demos that will teach you how to create your own orchid oasis. Now let’s see if anyone will eat them.
