Most successful comedians carefully straddle a line between being politically correct bores and finding humor in uncanny situations without taking stereotypes and controversial issues to offensive extremes. And then there’s Jim Jefferies. The Australian performer’s jokes unapologetically involve “retarded people,” burn victims, AIDS, and the Holocaust. He refers to both people and body parts as “cunts” at least once every five minutes. And his jabs at audience members are so cutting that a man once jumped onstage and punched Jefferies in the face during a show.
The incident made rounds on YouTube, eventually garnering more than 700,000 hits and introducing U.S. audiences to the controversial comedian who has sold out shows at the UK’s famous Edinburgh Comedy Festival for the past six years. And with a one-hour HBO special that debuted in May, Jefferies gave America a taste of his I-don’t-give-a-shit mockery.
