Marlena Shaw is a jazz chanteuse who has been sampled or remixed by everyone from Ghostface Killa, to Diplo, to DJs Shadow, and Premier. Her uncle Jimmy Burgess, a jazz trumpet man, gave her early lessons in music appreciation through the records he would spin for her young, impressionable, and finely tuned ears. She took the history, applied it to her daily life, propelled it forward through her own creative forces and made a career out of it. She has been singing professionally since the 1960s and is still going strong today. If you’ve never seen her perform, or bought one of her albums, there’s a good chance you’ve heard her voice on a commercial. Tonight she brings her talents to a church that is committed to promoting culutral events of the highest caliber in an open and accepting atmosphere for all races, creeds, and religions.
