Different ways exist to establish lineages of filmmakers, one of which—perhaps the most neglected—is the use of typeface. And while no director has yet to pick up Woody Allen’s obsession with Windsor, Stanley Kubrick’s fondness for Futura (in his case, extra bold) has already established an entire genus. His most famous acolyte is Wes Anderson, who’s exhibited a near-stranglehold on Futura Bold, no matter the color, but the newest disciple in the “No, that’s not Helvetica” pantheon may be Miami filmmaker Fro Rojas. His short film on pencil fighting is way too smart and heart-felt for a site like “Funny or Die”, so it was only a matter of time before he made another. Tonight’s premiere of “Inventing Kin,” the story of a girl trying to reconnect with her lost father, will be a treat for any other Futura devotees in the crowd, not to mention those who favor Anderson’s whimsical narrative technique.
