If your morning ritual begins with trimming your bonsai while you scan page after page of manga, and ends with martial arts practice and sushi, you’re probably what they call a Japanophile. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. As a matter of fact, the consulate general of Japan wants to help you celebrate. Join in the festivities of Japanese Culture Week by attending any or all of three events this Monday at the Alliance Française. That’s right, Japanese Culture Week happens at a French venue in Little Havana. Don’t worry, a film and talk about kaiju monsters (think Godzilla versus Mothra) from 6 to 6:45 p.m. will keep you in surreal mode. Then, from 7 to 7:30, a Japanese concert featuring Ensemble Otada will have you wondering why all the musicians look familiar. It’s because they are some of the most talented, gigging young musicians in South Florida’s indie and jazz circles.
From 7:30 to 9, enjoy the film 5 Centimeters per Second, an animated drama examining perception versus reality. The festival rolls on until May 16, so once the day is done, say arigato and thank your lucky stars for the Land of the Rising Sun. Visit afmiami.org for a complete list of events.
