“People describe me as a little dirtier,” comic Jessica Gross says. “[But] I like the word edgier better. Dirtier sounds like the hidden part of the video store.” Gross, and that is her real name, is just one of a dozen or so stand-up artists that Daniel Reskin has recruited for his showcase of comedic talent, Casa de Ha Ha, held once a month at his sister Lolo’s hip store in Little Haiti, Sweat Records.
While some of the comics are political in nature, Gross sticks to the gory details of her personal life, a potentially dangerous proposition for her boyfriend, Andrew Hevia, but a potentially very funny one for the rest of us. “I always preface the first date with: ‘Now you know you’re going to be in my comedy, right?’ ” she says. For instance, Hevia met Gross when she was one of the lots at a charity auction. Hevia bid $46 for a date with her but lost. Afterward, he asked her out anyway and then later revealed he’d had only $23 in his pocket that night. Lucky for the rest of us, Gross won’t cost us a penny this Monday.
