Count Jan Jelinek is another intriguingly “cutting-edge” German producer you’ve never heard of. Like compatriots Thomas Brinkmann and Laub, Jelinek specializes in crafting strange and wondrous experimental music that is surprisingly sleek and melodic, if not entirely free of pretension. Case in point: his most recent album, La Nouvelle Pauvreté, a conceptual farce released on the ~Scape label that finds him fronting a fake backing band, “The Exposures,” and pontificating on beauty and fashion in sardonic, almost-whispered vocals. High-minded, sure, but justified by the strange and wondrous experimental music that he generates.
Jelinek has recorded under other guises as well, including the machine soul-propagating pseudonyms Farben and Gramm. Which incarnation will show up for tonight’s performance? At the very least it should sound interesting.
