Jamaican-born Monty Alexander shares more with Bob Marley than a homeland. Though Alexander is a jazz pianist, his penchant for reggae runs deep throughout his music. One of his first albums released was Stir It Up, a Marley tribute, and although Alexander has since experimented with other genres such as American jazz and world music, he recently returned to making Marley covers, releasing Concrete Jungle: Music of Bob Marley this past March. The album explores twelve of Marley’s compositions using Alexander’s piano-oriented arrangements, making for an unusual method of interpreting work done by one of the world’s most renowned artists. Alexander will be performing Concrete Jungle with the help of those he recorded it with, including guitarist Wendel Ferraro, bassist Hassan Shakur, and drummer Herlin Riley.
