What circus boasts regal roots dating back to 1690, when the outfit’s namesake and founder, the Irish-born Michael Hanneford, performed for King George III of England? It’s the Royal Hanneford Circus. Now headquartered in Osprey, Florida, the family-run show travels 11 months annually, and stops at the Miami Arena (721 NW 1st Ave.) through Sunday, July 27. Among the amazing acts master of ceremonies Billy Martin will introduce in the 3 rings: The Mongolian contortionists known as Trio Yagaansetseg, who started training at age 6. The elastic petite women easily stack themselves with legs parallel to the floor and backs curved like paper clips. Mark Karoly, a sixth-generation circus performer who has been with Hanneford for 20 years and for whom standing on an elephant is just another bareback ride. The furry performers in Russia’s Polonik Poodle Revue, who will offer hurdle-jumping, double-decker skateboarding tricks, and a graceful hind-leg strut. And since every circus must have a clown, Raul Castano, a.k.a. Poloranco the Clown and his loyal poodle sidekick, who will pull off humorous bits such as their picnic in the park. The 3-day Miami stint also includes Aleksandr Bears & Balls, the Pedro Carrillo High Wire act, and plenty of Hanneford family members. Tickets range from $5 to $20. Summer school rules! That kind of talk gets you beat up on most playgrounds, but when the final project includes a published book, a play, or a film, those August days inside a classroom start looking pretty good. Led by Silvia Ramos, a writer and playwright who taught at Cuba’s Superior Institute of Art for 8 years before immigrating to the U.S., the Creative Writing & Cinema Workshop is open to both teens and adults who’ll collaborate on projects. Ramos is there to guide students through the creative process. The course runs through Friday, August 22, and meets twice a week at The Joy of Learning, 3601 NW 114th Ave. Cost is $200.
