A side project of Miami hip-hop group Phoenicia, Soul Oddity fuses Detroit electro with Miami bass funk to create a sound that, if anything, is much more odd than soulful. Founded by producers Romulo Del Castillo and Joshua Kay in 1996 after the two supposedly saw a UFO, the band has a sound that reflects an alien style; the electronic noises that carry throughout the group’s tracks sound a lot like E.T. eating an astronaut while navigating a spaceship. After releasing their debut, Tone Capsule, the year they launched the band, the two began performing more stripped-down music under Phoenicia and have since been toggling between the two projects.
